Description:
The Canada China Business Council and the Canadian Institute of International Affairs - Toronto Branch are pleased to host a special luncheon with Margaret MacMillan, author of the recently published Nixon in China. In 1972, Richard Nixon shocked the world, becoming the first American President to visit China. His visit marked the beginning of the thaw in Sino-American relations, and a dramatic and unexpected shift in the dynamics of a Cold War world. Nixon in China presents a comprehensive and compelling narrative of how that historic week in 1972 came about. In the forefront of the story are the interactions of an extraordinary and rich cast of personalities, who, while so different, were determined to make that first meeting remarkable and unforgettable. Almost twenty-five years later, the significance of Nixon's visit is not lost, as it continues to inform and shape the western world's engagement with China. Join us for lunch, as Margaret MacMillan shares her insights on this historic visit.
Margaret MacMillan is the author of Women of the Raj and the best selling Paris 1919, which won the 2003 Governor General's Award and several prestigious international prizes. She is the provost of Trinity College and professor of history at the University of Toronto. In 2007, she will become the warden of St. Antony's College at Oxford University.

Description:
John Kirton is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the G8 Research Group at the University of Toronto and author of Canadian Foreign Policy in a Changing World (Thomson Nelson, 2007). In recent writings Kirton has claimed Canada is an emerging energy superpower and our influence in international organizations such as the G8, NATO, and La Francophonie is helping build consensus. In a world of "diffuse dependence" Canada is becoming an alternative to the US as a source of capital and technological capability, and "Canada-the-capable" is helping "America-the-vulnerable" as its first-ranked supplier of regular and emergency energy imports and with troops in Afghanistan. What influence has Prime Minister Harper had on these and other developments? Join the debate!
