Event Summary:
Canada and Mexico: From North American Bookends to Strategic Partners
June 2, 2005
With Comments by Mexican Consular General to Canada, Mr. Carlos Pujalte
Summary by: Benita Hansraj, University of Toronto
On June 2, 2005 an excited and interested group of individuals joined the Mexican Consular General to Canada, Mr. Carlos Pujalte, in a discussion of the Canadian-Mexican bilateral relationship. Mr. Pujalte, a longstanding member of the Mexican Foreign Service, has also had major postings around the globe and with various institutions, including the United Nations, and the Organization of American States. He was also the former Ambassador to Costa Rica.
The Consul General highlighted the historical and deep ties between our two nations. His speech was both informative and humorous. It included of course an in-depth study of the enormous economic ties between the two strategic partners. Mr. Pujalte’s speech was followed by a very extensive question and answer period, during which time the audience inquired on a multitude of issues including the state of municipal politics in the largest urban centre in the world, Mexico City. The evening was brought to a close or rather beginning, with an informal dialogue with the Consular General over Mexican food and drinks.
The event was organized by Millicent Poon, a member of the CIIA Toronto Branch Board of Directors, and was hosted by Price Waterhouse Coopers.
