20 September, 2005
Summary by: Brendan Dahlinnolan
Former Ambassador Derek Burney recounted his experience as a member of the Canadian Foreign Service, and the lessons that can be learned for current Canadian-American relations. The Former Ambassador stressed the importance for senior Canadian officials to go beyond traditional diplomatic protocol to build strong personal relationships, even if it initially proves unpopular with Canadians. The Former Ambassador stressed that Canada must always take the lead in relations between the two countries, as a failure to do so could very well see Canada’s influence – both with the United States and internationally – eclipsed by other nations such as Australia. The speech was followed by an animated Question and Answer session.
