Canada’s 3-D Engagement at a Post-Conflict Crossroads of Civilisations

In the early morning of July 16th, the Canadian Institute of International Affair’s Toronto Branch hosted a lecture featuring Canada’s Ambassador to Afghanistan. Christopher Alexander spoke about the challenges of rebuilding the war-torn country to a packed audience.
 
Entitled Building the New Afghanistan: Canada’s 3-D Engagement at a Post-Conflict Crossroads of Civilization, Mr. Alexander described the history and current situation of Afghanistan, and the role Canada is taking to rebuild the country.
 
With his experience on the ground in Afghanistan, he is well equipped to present an account of the condition in that country.
 
Mr. Alexander’s career highlights include: establishing an embassy with a staff of more than 30 people; disbursed $250 million in assistance; and overseen 1,950 Canadian troops in the International Security Assistance Force. He has also served as Minister Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
 
More than 60 members and non-members of the CIIA gathered for the lecture held in Massey College at the University of Toronto. The event was well attended, including professors, government officials and business leaders.
 
The National Film Board of Canada captured the event on tape for its documentary on Canadian efforts in Afghanistan.
