CIC Toronto Branch Event

with Frances Cation, CIC Head Office

September 24, 2008

On the evening of 24 September 2008, following the Toronto Branch’s Annual General Meeting, three panelists discussed Foreign Direct Investment into the Greater Toronto Area. Lou Milard, Chair and CEO, Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance and Associate Counsel, chaired this group.

Carol Wilding, the first panelist and President and CEO of Toronto Board of Trade (BOT), took the floor. After outlining the BOT’s mandate, Wilding optimistically described Toronto’s economic competitiveness, but ultimately reminded the audience that several Toronto-based sectors, such as manufacturing, should continue to grow. Next, the second panelist, Kam Rathee, the President of the Canada-India Business Council, affirmed that Toronto should publicize itself more and should be more aggressive when attracting investment. Lastly, Don Eastwood, the Director of Economic Development at the City of Brampton, called for a harmonization between municipal, provincial and federal levels of government.
